“Wanna have sex?”

Consent.

There has been so much talk about it lately. At Utah State University there are posters about it in every hallway, the student buses, and the bathroom stalls. A large amount time and energy has been spent on teaching what it is: Consent is verbal, sober, enthusiastic, coherent, freely given, mutual, not coerced.

These posters and campaigns at universities across the country are wonderful. They have helped a lot of people to understand exactly what consent is on an intellectual level, but we are having the conversation in terms that don’t make everyone feel…
